It is recommended that children who are baptized and are at least seven years of age prepare for both the sacrament of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. The Diocese of Dallas requires children to attend a two-year preparation program before receiving First Eucharist (first and second grade). The child preparing for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist must be enrolled in the All Saints Family Formation, All Saints Catholic School, or Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Parents may delay the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist if they feel their child is not ready. Parents must attend the Parent/Youth Sacrament Preparation Monthly Sessions mandated by the Diocese.
The best preparation parents can give their children is to practice and live the faith. One of the most important ways to do this is by attending Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation. Participating in Sunday liturgy is integral to our children’s faith formation. Talk with your child about Mass before you go, and at appropriate moments during the celebration when you are in church together. Emphasize that the Mass is God’s family gathered to celebrate a sacred meal. While completing sacrament preparation lessons—such as attending Family Formation Sessions, All Saints Catholic School, or CGS—is essential for learning practical knowledge, faith must also be experienced. To be part of the parish family and to worship together each Sunday is faith in action. Parents, we expect you to provide your child with these experiences as an essential part of helping them practice and live their faith.
