After looking at the What and the Why, today we focus on the Who. The short answer is Everybody! But the nature of the relationship changes based on whom we’re talking about. Canonically (according to the laws of the Church), the Divine Office (LotH) is to be prayed regularly by those holding "Major Orders". These include priests, deacons, sisters, nuns, monks, and those consecrated in the religious life.

Someone once quizzed me: “Chris, what is the Official Prayer of the Church?” I wondered: Is it the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? The Rosary? The Chaplet of Divine Mercy? What about the Our Father? Well, in case you haven’t figured it out yet based on the title, the Official Prayer of the Catholic Church is the Liturgy of the Hours. [Insert applause]

Welcome to our first column of Singing with the Saints!  Each week we’ll dive into a different topics, from Music & Liturgy to Theology & History, things that may help you grow week by week.  Sometimes, we’ll explore narrow a topic, and at other times we’ll speak broadly so as to not lose the big picture.  Since we’re commencing the Liturgy of the Hours soon, we’ll examine it first!
