After looking at the What and the Why, today we focus on the Who. The short answer is Everybody! But the nature of the relationship changes based on whom we’re talking about. Canonically (according to the laws of the Church), the Divine Office (LotH) is to be prayed regularly by those holding "Major Orders". These include priests, deacons, sisters, nuns, monks, and those consecrated in the religious life.
Can. 1173: Fulfilling the priestly function of Christ, the Church celebrates the liturgy of the hours. In the liturgy of the hours, the Church, hearing God speaking to his people and recalling the mystery of salvation, praises him without ceasing by song and prayer and intercedes for the salvation of the whole world.
But what about the rest of us, the laity? Well, therein lies the beauty. The Church regards the Liturgy of the Hours as a gift to the laity. The Church shares these prayers with us, but we are in no way obliged to pray them in the way we are obliged to attend Sunday liturgies. These here are for our own spiritual renewal if we wish to partake.
The second way laity benefit from the Hours is that these prayers pray for us! Seven times a day, prayers of praise and petition are offered around the world for you and me. When your day hits a rough spot, countless believers are praying for you, at that moment! Lean on these prayers. Know that God is with you!
Liturgy of the Hours is slated to begin at All Saints, weekdays, 10/2 @ 8:30am.
